There are people that feel like their childhood happened just the day
before. For Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner), it really did! For her 13th
birthday party, Jenna invites all the cool kids to her party. Humiliation
follows when they lock her in a closet for a supposed game of "Seven Minutes
in Heaven" with a cute boy she has a crush on. With the door shut and Jenna
not suspecting a
thing, the kids take off, leaving her alone in the closet. Sitting
there by herself, young Jenna wishes she could be all grown up and
live the life she's always dreamed about living. When Jenna emerges
from the closet, she's 30 years old, with a successful career and a fabulous
apartment. Her wish had come true! As Jenna learns to cope with the year
2004, she discovers that this Jenna is missing something -- her best friend
from her childhood, Matt. When she tracks him down, she is devastated to
hear that they are no longer friends after a one-eighty change in her status
in high school. She also learns that Matt (Mark Ruffalo), her first love, is
engaged to be married. With time running out, Jenna hopes that it's not too
late.
Jennifer Garner plays a wonderfully innocent child trapped in an adult's
body in "13 Going On 30". Jenna Rink is the exact
opposite of the character she plays on "Alias". She's afraid to get into the
car with people she doesn't know - which turns out to be everyone after her
wish is granted - and it's a big thing when she's allowed to go to a party
on what she considers to be a school night. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie
and believe I would be just as upside down if I were to be in the same
position. There were funny moments, and there were serious moments, and it
all combined to make an entertaining chick flick that was worth my $10.95.
Rating:
Overall- B
I've chosen to give this movie a B because though it was very good, there were a few things that brought my mark down from an A. For example, there were funny snippets in the commercials that I never saw on the big screen. Also, some parts were a bit unrealistic, like Jenna's thirty year-old self hanging out with a bunch of thirteen year-olds. I don't know what their mothers were thinking when they let them go to THAT sleepover! However, this was a movie I would recommend if you're looking for a bit of lighthearted fun and a character with youthful innocence to spare. It definitely gives new meaning to the phrase, "Be careful what you wish for"!
